Quick Start

Get chatting on Matrix in under 5 minutes.

Option 1: Use Element Web (Fastest)

The quickest way to try Matrix:

1. Go to app.element.io
2. Click "Create Account"
3. Choose a username and password
4. You're on Matrix!

Your new Matrix ID will be @username:matrix.org.

Option 2: Download Element

For a better experience, download the native app:

Option 3: Choose a Different Homeserver

For more privacy or features, register on a different homeserver:

Power User Tip

You can use any Matrix client with any homeserver. The homeserver just stores your account - you're free to switch clients anytime.

First Steps After Signup

1. Set Up Key Backup

This is crucial! Set up key backup to protect your encrypted messages:

1. Go to Settings → Security & Privacy
2. Click "Set up Secure Backup"
3. Save your recovery key somewhere safe

warning

Without key backup, you'll lose access to encrypted message history if you log out or lose your device.

2. Verify Your Session

If you have multiple devices:

1. Log in on both devices
2. You'll see a verification prompt
3. Complete emoji or QR verification
4. Both sessions are now verified

3. Join Some Rooms

Find interesting rooms to join:

#matrix:matrix.org        - Official Matrix HQ
#element-web:matrix.org   - Element Web chat
#offtopic:matrix.org      - General chat
#homeservers:matrix.org   - Homeserver admins

To join: Click + → Join public room → Enter room alias

4. Explore Public Room Directories

1. Click the Explore button (compass icon)
2. Browse rooms by category
3. Search for topics you're interested in

Essential Settings

Configure these for the best experience:

Notifications

Settings → Notifications

• Enable desktop notifications
• Configure which events trigger alerts
• Set quiet hours if needed

Appearance

Settings → Appearance

• Choose light/dark theme
• Adjust message layout (IRC style vs bubbles)
• Set font size

Privacy

Settings → Security & Privacy

• Review logged-in devices
• Enable/disable read receipts
• Configure typing indicators
